what comes this?
tonight, curtains drawn
drauger scorned & gone
stripped down birched & raw
blackthorn this twitch & twixt
turn & twine
weave & bind
set to watch & ward
inside
the path, the path
opening

Note: For the purposes of these runepoems, I randomly select three runes and consider the meanings of each rune as I interpret and understand them based on a number of different resources, which may or may not be in alignment with accepted interpretations. I am a rune enthusiast, not an expert or scholar. These “runecasts” are not intended to be treated as divinatory, although there are elements of personal alchemy and shamanic practice in the crafting of each poem.

the journey begins:

the Path
crosses under dolmen thresholds
opening to the
spindle of worlds

this is dying
this is remaking
yew of the hollow
this is reshaping

i flow ocean
i fly breath
i seeth flame
i grave soil

returning to memories old
i ghost with the past
breathing in my all
to the clan to
which i was born

turning on returning
the journey begins
anew

dancing with dice
riding a horse on the wind
through the nine &
for the nine &
over nine waves
singing on spiritbreath
spelling a new begin

down wending roads
nine for nine to find
a dark woods path embrace

disassembled &
 mother womb kissed
brought forth
from an ulcerous
shed slag to
burn in healing light

Futhark update: raido added

©2021 Michael Raven

I’ve revised my interpretations of raido (ᚱ) based on additional reference material, inner reflection, and meditation. Rune poems and other writing referencing this rune moving forward will use the revised interpretations.

Once all runes have be reworked, I will migrate the old interpretations to the archive to maintain link integrity and for historical references.

the path
endless, with many tempting detours

when encountering other wayfarers
with compassion
one discovers oneself --
lampposts illuminating the way

bindrune | 13 dec 2021

I’ve been exploring creating bindrunes. This one may exist elsewhere, but I came up with it independently. Unless it came through as a subconscious thing, it is an original.

I don’t know that I’m done with it yet, but there is already a lot there, some of it unintentional until I started looking at the creation closer.

I started with a single algiz and two raido (for my upcoming trip).

algiz (ᛉ): protective, connections to higher self

raido (ᚱ): to guide me and set me along the right path (doubled)

Then, I added a stem to mirror to algiz and “double” that up as well. And that might have been the end of it, but I now see that a number of other runes are present.

inguz (ᛜ): seed, rest, internal growth (x1)

kenaz (ᚲ): transformation, enlightenment (x2; alternately, x4 or x6)

sowilo (ᛋ): guidance, wholeness, sun (x2)

othala (ᛟ): legacy, lasting peace (x2)

thurisaz (ᚦ): defense, protection, catalyst (x2)

gebo (ᚷ): gift, exchange, vision (x2)

tiwaz (ᛏ): sacrifice, justice (x2)

laguz (ᛚ): memory, dreams, water, unconscious (x4)

isa (ᛁ): stillness, self control, unity (x1)

nauthiz (ᚾ): understanding ørlǫg and wyrd, learning and opportunity (x4)

raido (ᚱ): with stem is now x4

algiz (ᛉ): with stem is now x2

In other words, there’s a lot going on here that came up as a result of me doing the initial mirrored raido combined with a single algiz. There are others that could potentially be represented, but I feel it is a bit of a stretch to do so.

caught up
between dog & wolf
untethered, unmoored
i allow myself to drift
across rippling waters
trusting wyrd's guidance
to homeward shores

thunder in the distance
i ride towards the storm
to honor my fylgja
to renew oaths
to find myself
reborn

the river of wyrd runs through me
like a horse riding hard
winds of fate tug my hair
pulling, too, at you
drawing concordant towards
a wish waiting at
the edge of the world
