Oracle / 07 Oct 22

For something a little different today, I decided to use my new Oracle of the Morrigan deck I received yesterday morning instead of runes as the basis for a daily prompted poem. Due to wishing to respect artwork copyright, this will likely be one of the rare times I share artwork from the deck (aside from my gleeful post about its receipt yesterday). I have some different ideas brewing in my head about how I wish to use the deck that aren’t part of a daily prompt regimen.

a battle just begun
wading rivers running red
who will cast that long throw?
ancestors stand guard
against the worst
but firm & piercing thrusts
will still win

Oh teh noes! Michael has discovered Etsy!

Actually, I am quite familiar with Etsy, I’ve just largely avoided it because my wallet weeps whenever the page loads up in my browser. So, I’ve generally avoided it (except to look at the wool cloak I wish I could justify purchasing).

Over the weekend, however, I was looking into other matters and ended up stumbling on a picture I couldn’t resist looking closer at, so I clicked through to check out some nifty-looking altar candles decorated with three of The Morrigan’s aspects: Badb, Macha, and Morrigan. I loved the art, but wasn’t prepared at that moment to pay for those candles (I’m current considering e-candles to keep any of the seven kitties from going foom) and I about went back to my business at hand when I saw another picture that grabbed my attention from the same seller for a deck of cards titled The Morrigan Oracle by the seller, FeralMagic.

oracle, oh oracle
tell me of my dreams...

will the drizzle persist
tap-tapping on my head
down the wending trail
from pine to oak and
thorn to ash?

i wear my brim low
to keep eyes dry
hand on thorn
fire in skies

greystone of lichen
standing sentinel
flintcrossed palm
flintcrossed soul

Autumn equinox

As mentioned in an earlier post, after dumping out all of the junk in my head about such matters, I am trying to draw some correlations from a bunch of different sources about what seems like important details to develop around my personal cosmology. What I think is important, or what might require further thought on my part may or may not be in agreement with other sources (scholarly or otherwise). Your mileage may vary.

Infodumping various thoughts on autumn equinox:

Brain, An Afterward

Interesting couple of thoughts as I did some independent refreshing my memory on Dagda in light of how I am reorganizing my brain, I came across a couple of interesting relationships. Only proceed past the “more” tag if this kind of thing is interesting to you. It very well might be a slog if it doesn’t float your boat.

Random, chaotic thoughts follow…

Things I’m Putting Back Inside My Head (Autumn, part 3)

As I laid in bed last night thinking about what I have written, I am not sure that I’m happy with the tone and flavor of Part 1 and Part 2 have had. The core concepts are fine, it’s the rest of it that doesn’t sit well with me. Either too flip or too scholarly.

And that, my friends and readers, is why I don’t do this stuff anymore. I have difficulty finding a balance when it comes explaining my thought processes in these matters. And the previous two posts have been a bit manic as a result as I try to not come off as a know-it-all and still show that I’m not just full of hot, imaginary air.

Taking a step back…

To catch yourself up with my ambling rambling preambling self, check out Part 1 of this post series that might read something like:

In which Michael Raven has emptied his head of mostly grey fluff and dander, and then tried to make sense of the contents of the rubbish bin of his mind…

Where were we? Oh, yeah, The Dagda and his place as a representative patron of one of the four astronomical holidays: The two solstices and two equinoxes.

As mentioned yesterday, I’m prone to thinking hard about my beliefs. For some 35 years now, I’ve been trying to wrap my arms around just what elements of various systems of belief “work” for me, and those that don’t. There is a lot of Eastern thinking that has an outsized role in how I think, from Tao/Dao to Chan to Zen. I hold some of that thinking in the realm of the philosophical branch of my belief systems and they act as a compass for my beliefs, which are separate and apart from my philosophical values. And those philosophical values are just mostly informed by the Eastern thought (I’m going to reduce it to “Tao” or “Zen” moving forward, and interchangeably so; we can argue about my reasons sometime at a later time, if it really bugs you), as I have been known to find value in some Western thinking as well (existentialism has a role, as far as I am concerned, as does absurdism, amongst others). And, while I think I have a decent grasp on those philosophies as they pertain to me, I’ve never seriously sat down and codified my actual belief system.

Over intermittent posts moving forward, I think I might try to rationalize my beliefs “in the open” to see if I can make something cohesive about it. Or, perhaps, it will always be a chaotic mess that only I can grasp.
