Hope.

“No! No! No!” he screamed at the computer screen glowing brightly in the dark room. “You’re not supposed to give me hope!” He stormed out of his office and planted his face in a bedroom pillow to muffle the anguished animal noise coming from his throat.

Most of the words on the screen might as well have been the scribbles of a child for their content, all platitudes and small talk; it was the stark sentinel sentence at the end that was at issue.

“I love you,” was what those words read.
